The Board of County Commissioners is the legislative branch of Broward County government. A separation between the legislative and administrative functions of County Government is provided for in the Broward County Charter.

Broward’s government structure is comprised of county government and 31 municipalities, all making diligent efforts to accommodate business and create a congenial place for commerce in Broward County. At the center of a metropolitan area of more than 5 million people, Broward County is an international crossroads of the world. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport continues to break records with passenger counts while Port Everglades, a department of county government, is positioned to become the world’s number one cruise port. Tourism, the mainstay of the county’s economy, has an annual impact of more than $7.2 billion.

County agencies vigilantly pursue opportunities to streamline and expedite permitting procedures, including an online permitting process. Both the county and municipalities strive to build and maintain the best infrastructure for businesses and residents.

The County Commission is comprised of nine members elected from single member districts. Each commissioner must be a resident of the particular district for which seat he/she seeks election. Each year, the Commission elects a mayor who serves as the county’s official representative and ceremonial dignitary and provides leadership on issues facing the county.

The Commission appoints the county administrator, county attorney and commission auditor. The Commission also appoints numerous advisory and regulatory boards. The County Commission meets in formal session the first four Tuesdays each month at 10 a.m. in Room 422 of the Broward County Governmental Center. In addition to various other formal sessions, the Commission meets frequently in workshops. The public is encouraged to attend Commission meetings.
